Hohenems Station

Hohenems Station

Hohenems, Vorarlberg

CLIENT:

Austrian Federal Railways

PERIOD:

2006 - 2016

BRIEF DESCRIPTION:

The ÖBB (Austrian Federal Railway) has been modernizing its train stations in the Austrian Province of Voralberg since 2003. More investment was made in comfort for its clients, as well as for barrier-free facilities, security, and easier connections to various transportations systems. In line with the Regional Transportation Concept for the Rhine River Valley conducted by the ÖBB, the renovation and addition to the Hohenems Train Station was undertaken without interruption to ongoing rail commerce.

The Hohenems Station was developed into an efficient, multi-modal transport interface, including modernization of the rails, a new signaling and switching station, and a contemporary Station Building. The new building offers 500m² of commercial space and passenger service areas. The smooth and user-friendly transition from train to bus, pedestrian connections, bicycle and automobile facilities was of highest priority in the design development.

Further focus and attention was given toward the improvement of the public realm with the same level of quality as the built environment, anchoring the Hohenems Station into the urban fabric and enhancing the quality of a transitional stopover period.
